The Shift to 48V DC in AI Data Center Infrastructure

For decades, server fans operated at 12V DC — a legacy of ATX power supply standards designed for general-purpose computing. AI data centers are breaking from this legacy. The Open Compute Project’s Open Rack v3 specification mandates 48V DC power distribution at the rack level, driven by the massive power densities of GPU computing (30–150 kW per rack) that make 12V bus resistance losses commercially significant.

This transition is accelerating: Meta, Microsoft, Google, and most hyperscale cloud providers now deploy OCP-compatible or proprietary 48V rack architectures. NVIDIA’s MGX modular system design also accommodates 48V power. Understanding 48V DC cooling fan requirements is increasingly essential for AI infrastructure procurement.

Physics of 48V vs 12V Fan Power Delivery

Power = Voltage × Current (P = V × I). For a 50W fan motor:

In a rack with 20 fans consuming 50W each (1,000W total fan power), the current difference is:

For AI clusters with 10,000+ fans, this difference translates to meaningful infrastructure savings in cable, bus bars, and thermal management of the power distribution system itself.

48V DC Fan Requirements for OCP Open Rack v3

OCP Open Rack v3 specifies 48V DC (40–60V range) for rack-level power. Cooling fans in OCP-compatible RDHx doors, CDU stations, and auxiliary systems must natively accept 48V input without intermediate conversion. Key requirements:

Applications in AI Liquid Cooling Infrastructure

RDHx Door Arrays: 92mm and 120mm 48V DC fans mounted in rear door heat exchanger panels. Array of 12–16 fans per 42U door panel delivers 1,200–1,500 CFM for 40–60 kW rack dissipation.

CDU Station Cooling: 120mm and 172mm 48V DC fans in CDU cabinet heat exchangers. 172mm models (280–350 CFM) enable compact CDU designs for 100 kW+ heat rejection without excessive fan count.

NVIDIA MGX Chassis: MGX’s modular GPU sled design accommodates standard 120mm fans with 48V input for cold plate auxiliary and inter-module airflow.

Edge AI Liquid Cooling: 240mm radiator fans for compact liquid cooling loops in edge AI installations (telecom, factory automation). Lower noise profile suitable for occupied environments.
